HICKORY…  The Hickory Public Schools Board of Education announced the selection of the district’s new Superintendent during the specially called meeting on Tuesday evening, June 8, 2021. The new Superintendent is Dr. Bryan W. Taylor, a native of Mount Airy, NC. Taylor replaces Dr. Robbie Adell, who is retiring after 37 active years of service to NC Public Schools.

Assuming his duties later this summer, Dr. Taylor possesses a notable history of administrative leadership, including his current role as Assistant Superintendent of Stokes County Schools where he is responsible for district administration and operations.  He was also the previous Superintendent of Avery County Schools, where he led the efforts to create a balanced and sustainable budget. He also led the effort to bring about a much-needed, high school construction and renovation project. During his tenure, Dr. Taylor led the district to some of the highest student performance data in the State of North Carolina.

With a diverse and significant background in education for nearly three decades, Dr. Taylor has served in many capacities. These include Student Success Coach, Special Education Teacher, Principal of Mount Airy Middle School, Director of Special Education, Federal Programs, and Student Services; Executive Director of Human Resources and Operations, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources and Operations, and as Adjunct Professor in the Doctoral Program at Gardner-Webb University.

“We are so excited to welcome Dr. Bryan Taylor as the next Superintendent of Hickory Public Schools,” said Dr. Bryan Graham, chair of the HPS Board of Education.  “Dr. Taylor has an impressive breadth of experience as a North Carolina educator, having held a range of positions including teacher, coach, principal, director and executive director, assistant superintendent, and superintendent.

“Dr. Taylor impressed the Board with his desire to ‘reach and teach’ all of our students in Hickory.  As we emerge from a school year dominated by the pandemic, we knew we needed a proven leader to guide our schools and ensure that all of our students are provided with the services and educational opportunities necessary for success.  Dr. Taylor is the right person to lead us forward, and we can't wait for the great things in store for our district,” said Graham.

Wherever Dr. Taylor has served in education, he has become well-known as an active member of the community.  He has a long history of serving on multiple community boards and supporting Chambers of Commerce, Partnerships for Children, youth and sports foundations, emergency planning committees — in addition to coaching multiple youth athletic teams, as well as serving as a volunteer for Special Olympics.

Dr. Taylor is a member of numerous professional associations including the American Association of (both) School Administrators and Superintendents, NC Association of School Administrators/Personnel Administrators, Supervision and Curriculum Development, the NC High School Athletic Association, and many more.

According to Ittiely Carson, the vice-chair of the HPS Board of Education, Dr. Bryan Taylor impressed upon the Board that he will be highly visible in our schools and engaged as a great listener for every corner of our community. “Having been a teacher, we look forward to seeing Dr. Taylor actively and consistently connected to each of our nine schools,” said Carson. “He will meet and greet our students and teachers as he witnesses the birth of the learning that happens in our classrooms, chorus rooms, indoor ball courts, outdoor fields, and in our professional development labs as well as our board meetings.

“It will be just as keen for Dr. Taylor to value getting to know our cafeteria and bus driver personnel, and all faculty,” added Carson. “The relationship building within the schools is as important as getting to know the great supporters in the communities that he has been called to serve.  It is the hope of the HPS Board of Education that our district and wonderfully diverse community will support the continued building of excellence in our educational foundation under the leadership of Dr. Bryan Taylor -- as the new Superintendent of Hickory Public Schools.”

Dr. Taylor earned his Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from Gardner-Webb University with his dissertation entitled: “Parent Motivation Regarding Dual Language Immersion.”  His Masters of Arts was also earned from Gardner-Webb with his Bachelor of Science earned from High Point University. He also earned an Associates of Arts from Surry Community College.

“It is an honor and privilege to be selected as the next Superintendent of Hickory Public Schools,” said Dr. Taylor. “I would like to extend a special ‘Thank You to the HPS Board of Education’ for believing in me.  I am excited to have the opportunity to partner with the Board of Education, district leadership, staff, students, and families as we work to make Hickory Public Schools the best district it can be.”

Dr. Taylor will begin his leadership role with Hickory Public Schools on Monday, July 19, 2021.
