grad hhs 2020 tasselGraduation Day for Class of 2020 at Hickory High and Hickory Career & Arts Magnet High (HCAM) is almost here!

Seniors are working to close out their last year of high school--submitting all assignments, taking exams, signing for college scholarships, picking up their caps & gowns, and picking up yearbooks!

It's a different kind of year--and a different kind of graduation--due to the restrictions of COVID-19. But we are doing what is feasible within the state and local guidelines. Watch for more updates on this page as we announce the final graduation plans for each of our two high schools.

In addition, everyone is invited to purchase an ad to celebrate their senior with the Hickory Daily Record--as a special publication will be printed just for the seniors from Hickory Public Schools.  Look for details on social media (FB) or contact Tiffany Hovis at the HDR: [email protected]

We look forward to announcing more news regarding graduation ceremonies! In the meantime, be sure to visit the Hickory Public Schools Facebook page for celebration photos of our students!

Hickory High School Graduation Changes

Hickory High School Seniors and Parents,

Unfortunately, the weather is not cooperating with our original graduation plans at the Crawdads’ L.P. Frans Stadium. A bit of rain would have been ok, but the National Weather Service has given a 60% chance of thunderstorms with locally high winds for tomorrow evening.  As you can imagine, even with a drive-in / drive-through graduation, we cannot have our graduates, their guests, and our staff outside during a thunderstorm. Metal stages and aluminum poles are not very friendly when lightning is around - not to mention the effects of driving rain.

With that in mind, a decision was made made  to hold the graduation ceremony at the high school in the gymnasium. Of course, this change will not make everyone happy, and for that I am truly sorry. We want y'all to have the biggest graduation imaginable, but circumstances have combined to thwart that. This is not the decision that we wanted to make, however it is the only prudent decision to make to ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone involved in the graduation ceremony.

Change #1:

Due to the size of the gym we will be able to accommodate more guests via social distancing than we originally anticipated. Each graduate will be able to invite five guests. Of course there will be stringent social distancing in place inside the gym and we ask that you abide by instructions from staff on seating.

Change #2:

Graduates and their guests will park in the Junior Parking Lot (celery stalk lot) and will be directed by staff to parking spaces. They will then be directed by staff to certain positions so that they end up being staged in the parking lot beside the gymnasium. This will take a lot of cooperation from each driver in following the directions of our parking staff. The plan has been designed to keep a smooth flow of traffic and make the entire ceremony run as efficiently as possible.

Change #3:

Since the entire ceremony will be conducted inside, face coverings will be mandatory for all guests.

Other Information from Yesterday:

Graduating seniors will be divided into two groups, with each group going through the ceremony, then vacating the parking lot to allow the next group of graduates into the parking lot. The first group will begin at 4:00pm and the second group at 6:30pm.

Weather permitting, Junior Marshals will deliver programs to cars and escort graduates and guests to the school entrance. Groups of ten graduates and their guests at a time will be ushered into the gym. The graduates will be lined up at least six feet apart and when their name is called they will walk across the stage to receive their diploma. An FM system will be used to broadcast student names. The entire ceremony will be broadcast live, as well as recorded for future playback (info on this will be forthcoming SOON). Families will have special seating in the gym to maintain social distancing. After receiving their diplomas, the group of ten graduates and their families will be escorted back to the parking lot. This format will continue until all graduates have been recognized.

The planned fireworks show will take place at the Crawdads' Stadium after the conclusion of the ceremony. Extreme weather conditions may mean that the fireworks have to be postponed.

Once more, this is not the situation we wanted nor the decision that we wanted to have to make. Our goal has always been to make the Class of 2020 graduation special and memorable. We think that it still will be.
