HPS Book Bus goes global

at Southwest Elementary

The students of Southwest Elementary School recently had the experience of “going global” through a visit from the Hickory Public Schools Book Bus.

With an early morning start, the HPS Book Bus offered a unique setting for the classroom experience. Aaron Kohrs, the tour guide for the “Going Global on the Magic School Bus” themed event, set the tone for the children’s entrance on the bus with colorful displays and soft Asian music playing in the background.  Once they stepped into the magical experience, the children quickly took their places on the carpeted bus floor—ready to listen and learn. Kohrs read stories representing China, India, and England.

Following story time with Kohrs, who used an iPad (the bus has Wi-Fi wireless networking), the students discussed global points of interest on the over-sized bouncy globe—tossing the globe above their heads for simple enjoyment.

The global theme was a natural for Kohrs with his Vietnamese heritage. Adopted at birth by local retired educators, Richard and Kathy Kohrs, Aaron Kohrs currently serves as the administrative assistant for the Book Bus and as a substitute teacher. He earned his undergraduate degree in history from UNC-Wilmington and his master’s degree in international relations from the University College Cork of Cork, Ireland.  The Book Bus theme was clearly a good pick for Kohrs with his personal and professional interest in global education.

The “going global” Book Bus adventure closed with Southwest students receiving a new book as well as gift items donated by volunteer and HPS substitute teacher, Patty Gorry.

The global theme for the HPS Book Bus is just one of many activities offered to community students, according to Kohrs. “Typically, the Book Bus rolls four days each week, Monday through Thursday, from 4:00 PM-5:00 PM in the Ridgeview and Hilltop neighborhoods. So it was a worthy experience for the Southwest students to explore the Book Bus since the Southwest neighborhoods have not been covered in the past.”

Over the summer, the HPS Book Bus will roll into additional neighborhoods including the southwest part of Hickory.  A summer schedule will soon be posted on the HPS website: www.hickoryschools.net    Watch for special summer themes and additional opportunities to “go global” through the array of books available on the HPS Book Bus.
