Pope Selected as new HPS Transportation Coordinator

Renric J. Pope is the new Transportation Coordinator for Hickory Public Schools. No stranger to transporting children to and from school, Pope has worked with school transportation since 2010.

A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Pope’s professional career has included managing an insurance office for 26 years and working in the business department for an area maintenance company.

Pope understands the daily needs that come with driving a bus—as she not only served as a bus driver for Hickory Public Schools but she also drove for Western Piedmont Transit Authority.  In addition, Pope previously served as the assistant to the HPS Transportation Coordinator, Tim Beane, who recently retired.

In her new role, Pope will recruit new hires for the district transportation, supervise all yellow bus drivers, develop bus routes for all HPS enrolled students, assign activity buses for sporting events and field trips, and compile reports for the NC State Board of Education.

“I am excited about this new opportunity,” said Pope. “I already know several of the people and I look forward to continuing to develop professional relationships with HPS colleagues and the community. The job will be challenging at times, but a good challenge—as the safety of our children is the number one priority at Hickory Public Schools.”

“Renric Pope is an excellent addition to the HPS leadership team,” said Dr. Robbie Adell, HPS superintendent. “The fact that she personally understands the challenges bus drivers face on a daily basis will be key to her new role. We congratulate Ms. Pope on her position and welcome her to the HPS leadership team.”

Pope will oversee 30 bus drivers who help to drive 23 HPS school buses with 106 daily runs, covering 1,563 miles each day.

Pope also announced the need for additional school bus drivers. The next training class for bus drivers will be held May 16-18. Interested participants may contact Ms. Pope at the HPS administrative services building: 828-322-2855.
